This might not be a problem in another setting: characters die in games, and it can be well-deployed and effective. It's everything short of the main character wearing a countdown clock on his back. He sits down and wheezes for a while after several missions, he talks endlessly about how he's about to go. You see this every time we zoom in on his face in a cutscene, you see this if you try to get a shave, you see this when he sits down to eat. For the rest of the game Arthur is a pale, red-eyed coughing mess, a dead man walking if there ever was one. There are more than 10 hours of gameplay after Arthur's unfortunate diagnosis, hours that answer the question the rest of the game seemed to be posing: "can this get any bleaker?" Yes, in fact, it can. It feels almost pointless to even put a spoiler warning on this article: it's not like anyone is surprised by the fact that this guy is going to kick it. That's why we don't see him in Red Dead Redemption, and that's going to be the final act of this game. Arthur Morgan is dying and will die, sooner rather than later. We all suspected that Arthur Morgan wouldn't live through the game essentially as soon as he was revealed, but this puts a pretty fine point on it. It's at this point in the game that the last shred of doubt is gone from your mind.
